Youth Food Week 2008 – Michelin dining for the young people of Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s leading Michelin-starred restaurants number one, The Kitchin and Restaurant Martin Wishart have teamed up to create Youth Food Week in a bid to offer the young people of Edinburgh a chance to experience Michelin-starred dining.

Martin Wishart says, “A fantastic event following on from the success of my Children's Cooking Classes, I look forward to welcoming many young people to the Restaurant for Edinburgh's first Youth Food Week"

Taking place 14-18 October, the event offers a younger market the chance to experience Michelin-starred dining at the leading restaurants in the city. From just £21.50 (lunch at The Kitchin and Martin Wishart) and £27.50 (dinner at number one), 18-25 year olds can sample a three-course menu with accompanying wines, created by each of the participating restaurants and designed to specifically tickle their tastebuds.

number one’s Jeff Bland, says: “The idea for Youth Food Week came about because we wanted to address the growing concerns regarding the lack of young Scottish talent joining the restaurant industry. Our aim is to help educate young people on the excellent local produce that is growing on their doorstep. Our suppliers have been extremely supportive in the project and together we hope to educate their palates and bring a unique dining experience to some young adults.”

Michelin-star chef-proprietor, Tom Kitchin added; “Great food is all about trying something new.  Giving these young people a chance to sample food at its best – fresh, in season and combined in delicious dishes – will hopefully ignite a passion for quality cuisine.

“We are really focused on nurturing young talent at The Kitchin and this is a great opportunity to inspire young people to share our appreciation of fine seasonal Scottish ingredients.”

The Kitchin was opened in June 2006 by husband and wife team Tom and Michaela Kitchin on Edinburgh’s stylish Leith waterfront.

In January 2007, The Kitchin was awarded a coveted Michelin-star, making Tom the youngest ever Scottish chef/proprietor to achieve one at the age of 29. This accolade was a real achievement for a restaurant whose doors had only been open just six months previous.  Tom Kitchin presents a menu that is always in keeping with the seasons and demonstrates his passion for Scottish produce.  The restaurant presents modern British cuisine influenced by French cooking techniques and an appreciation of the best ingredients available from Scotland’s outstanding natural larder.
